If you were injured in a car accident in Ontario, physiotherapy is very likely covered — and you shouldn’t have to pay a cent out of pocket.
Most people who’ve been in a motor vehicle accident have no idea what they’re entitled to. The insurance system in Ontario is complicated, the paperwork is overwhelming, and the last thing you need when you’re in pain is to spend hours on the phone trying to figure out who pays for what.
This guide breaks it all down clearly — what you’re covered for, how the process works, and how to access treatment as quickly as possible.
The Short Answer
Yes. If you were injured in a motor vehicle accident in Ontario, your auto insurance covers physiotherapy and other rehabilitation treatments under what’s called Statutory Accident Benefits (SAB) — regardless of who caused the accident. You do not need to wait for fault to be determined to start treatment. You do not need to sue anyone. You simply need to notify your insurer and begin the process.
What Are Statutory Accident Benefits?
Ontario operates under a no-fault insurance system for accident benefits. This means that no matter who was at fault for the accident — you, the other driver, or a combination — you are entitled to accident benefits from your own auto insurance policy.
Statutory Accident Benefits are a mandatory part of every auto insurance policy in Ontario. They exist specifically to cover medical and rehabilitation expenses, income replacement, and other costs arising from a motor vehicle accident.
What Treatments Are Covered?
Under Ontario’s accident benefits system, the following rehabilitation services are typically covered for injured patients:
Physiotherapy — assessment, manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, modalities
Chiropractic care
Registered Massage Therapy (RMT)
Acupuncture
Psychological counselling — for anxiety, PTSD, or emotional trauma related to the accident
Occupational therapy
Assistive devices — braces, orthotics, crutches if required
At Progressive Rehab, our Mississauga and Brampton clinics offer physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage therapy and acupuncture — all of which are typically covered under MVA accident benefits.
How Much Is Covered?
Coverage amounts depend on the severity of your injuries and how they are classified under Ontario’s insurance framework:
Minor Injury Guideline (MIG): If your injuries are classified as minor — soft tissue injuries like sprains, strains, and whiplash — you are entitled to up to $3,500 in medical and rehabilitation benefits. This is the most common classification for rear-end collisions and minor accidents.
Non-Minor Injuries: If your injuries are more serious — fractures, disc herniations, nerve damage, concussion, psychological impairment — you may be entitled to significantly more coverage, ranging from $65,000 to $1,000,000+ depending on your policy and the severity of your condition.
Optional Benefits: Many Ontario drivers purchase optional accident benefit coverage above the standard amounts. Check your policy documents or call your broker to find out exactly what you have.
Does It Matter Who Was At Fault?
No. Under Ontario’s no-fault system, your accident benefits come from your own insurance company regardless of fault. You make a claim with your own insurer, not the other driver’s. Fault determination happens separately and affects your premiums — it does not affect your access to accident benefits for treatment.
How Do I Start a Claim?
Step 1 — Report the accident to your insurer immediately. Call your auto insurance company as soon as possible after the accident — ideally within 24 hours. Let them know you were injured and that you’ll be making an accident benefits claim. They will assign you a claim number and send you paperwork.
Step 2 — Complete the OCF-1 (Application for Accident Benefits). This is the standard Ontario form to initiate your claim. Your insurer will send it to you. Complete it as thoroughly and accurately as possible, describing all of your symptoms — even ones that seem minor. Symptoms that are not reported early are sometimes disputed later.
Step 3 — See your family doctor. Visit your family doctor as soon as possible after the accident. This creates a medical record of your injuries and symptoms from the outset, which is important for your claim. Your doctor may also complete an OCF-3 (Disability Certificate) which helps establish the nature and severity of your injuries.
Step 4 — Book your physiotherapy assessment. You do not need to wait for your claim to be fully processed to start treatment. Contact Progressive Rehab as soon as you have your claim number. We will handle the direct billing to your insurer — you do not pay upfront. Our physiotherapists will conduct a thorough assessment, document your injuries, and begin treatment immediately.
Step 5 — Your physiotherapist submits an OCF-18 (Treatment Plan). For treatment beyond the initial assessment, your physiotherapist will submit a treatment plan to your insurer outlining the proposed treatment, timeline, and cost. In most minor injury cases, this is approved without issue.
Do I Need a Lawyer?
For straightforward accident benefit claims involving soft tissue injuries, you typically do not need a lawyer — your physiotherapy clinic handles the billing and documentation directly with your insurer. However, if your injuries are serious, if your insurer is disputing your classification, or if you are considering a tort claim against the at-fault driver, consulting a personal injury lawyer is advisable. Many personal injury lawyers in Ontario offer free consultations and work on contingency (no upfront fees).
Common Mistakes That Hurt Your Claim
Waiting too long to start treatment. Insurance companies and courts look at gaps in treatment as evidence that your injuries weren’t serious. Start treatment as soon as possible after the accident — even if you feel relatively okay in the first few days. Whiplash and soft tissue injuries often worsen significantly in the 48–72 hours after impact.
Not reporting all your symptoms. At your assessment, describe everything — neck pain, headaches, dizziness, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, jaw pain, back pain, shoulder stiffness. If it wasn’t there before the accident, mention it. Symptoms that go unreported early are harder to claim later.
Missing appointments. Consistent attendance at your physiotherapy sessions creates a clear treatment record. Gaps in attendance can be used by insurers to argue that your injuries have resolved.
Assuming minor means unimportant. A MIG classification doesn’t mean your injuries aren’t real or painful — it simply means they fall into a defined category for insurance purposes. If your injuries are more complex than initially classified, your physiotherapist and doctor can provide documentation to support a reclassification.
